united nations sustainable development goals
the 17 sustainable development goals (also known as sdgs) were formally agreed by the un at the sustainable development summit in new york in september 2015, and came into effect from january 2016. the goals are an internationally agreed set of global high level targets relating to international development to tackle poverty and inequality.

it is not yet too late. we are almost a third of the way towards the deadline for achieving the un sustainable development goals, and there is still a lot to do by 2030. who will rise to the challenge? who is ready to leave their comfort zone and take responsibility? the un? governments? ngos? businesses? the others? us? the answer, of course, is all of us! we need everyone to get involved. no one can win the fight against poverty, inequality and climate change alone.

the united nations sustainable development goals (sdgs) are 17 goals with 169 targets that all 191 un member states have agreed to try to achieve by the year 2030. health has a central place in sdg 3: ensure healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages, underpinned by 13 targets that cover a wide spectrum of who’s work. almost all of the other 16 goals are directly related to health or will contribute to health indirectly. the new agenda, which builds on the millennium development goals, aims to be relevant to all countries and focuses on improving equity to meet the needs of women, children and the poorest, most disadvantaged people.

in september 2015 world leaders adopted the 2030 agenda for sustainable development and its 17 goals that cut across disciplines, sectors and institutional mandates, acknowledging the integrated nature of the many challenges that humanity faces – from gender inequality to inadequate infrastructure, from youth unemployment to environmental degradation. in the preamble to the 2030 agenda, world leaders affirmed that they are: “determined to protect the planet from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production, sustainably managing its natural resources and taking urgent action on climate change, so that it can support the needs of the present and future generations.” un environment’s challenge in the 2030 agenda is to develop and enhance integrated approaches to sustainable development – approaches that will demonstrate how improving the health of the environment will bring social and economic benefits. aiming at reducing environmental risks and increasing the resilience of societies and the environment as a whole, un environment action fosters the environmental dimension of sustainable development and leads to socio-economic development. summary of sustainable development goals as they relate to environmental issues a list of the sustainable development goals and the environment related targets are available here. there are thirty (30) indicators that un environment is taking a lead on. on areas not directly related to the environment, un environment is working with other agencies. it should be noted that this is an ongoing process and subject to change.
